Jan, 13, plays a video game in his parents' bedroom. Last year Jan was helping out at a barbershop for tips, but this year his Turkish is good enough that he is studying in a Turkish school. Jan, Loury and their family fled Aleppo in 2012. In Istanbul the family relies on Loury's salary to live more comfortably. When she first arrived in Istanbul she was working in a factory that manufactures clothes with her dad. She now works in retail at clothing stores in a mall, where she is translating for Arabic and Kurdish speaking customers to Turkish. She earns about 1500 Turkish Lira a month. She taught herself Turkish and is now working on improving her English.
