Five Amazonian Manatees released back into the wild

A manatee feeds on surface plants at the rescue center. The manatee plays a vital role in the Amazonian ecosystem, eating the surface plants to keep waterways open and allow photosynthesis to occur in plants under the water. Centro de Rescate Amazónico near Iquitos, Perú, released five endangered Amazonian Manatees back into their habitat in the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve after about three years of rehabilitating the rescued mammals. It was the first release in Perú.
