Hoor*, 16, arrived in Istanbul in late June, after being smuggled from Kunduz, Afghanistan, where her uncle had plans to marry her to a much older man. After arriving in Istanbul, she was raped. Hoor saw the sea for the first time in Istanbul. When she looks at it, she says she feels calm and comforted. The Afghan dress she wears, made by her mother and given to her as as an early Eid al-Fitr gift, is one of the few things she brought with her on the journey. She last saw her mother a week before she left Afghanistan. When she misses her mother, she holds the dress to her face and tries to find traces of her scent. She is now living at a state-run orphanage and in the process of getting her Turkish residency.
