Back to school

Students practice the alphabet in a small village-based classroom in Shibarak, Afghanistan. The closest government school is about 4 kilometers away, so before the community-based school was started in the village most of the younger children, especially girls, did not attend school. With the help of a humanitarian aid organization, the community started this classroom, which is taught by an 18-year-old girl in the village who is simultaneously finishing grade 12 at the nearby government school. After two or three years of attending class in the village the hope is that the students will continue their studies at the government school.
