Istanbul Hüzün

These images are a visual exploration of the Turkish concept of hüzün, defined as sadness, melancholy or gloominess but in a collective and also spiritual sense. The word originally comes from Arabic. It's a concept I didn't understand before living in Turkey, but now I've felt it. The country exhibits a strange mix of the past and present, new buildings and construction amidst a traditional people kind of holding onto an older, traditional version of Turkey in their hearts and minds.

A view of Istanbul and a bridge spanning the Bosphorus Strait taken from the Havatas airport shuttle bus.
