In 1980 Pope John Paul II visited the favela of Vidigal in south Rio de Janeiro. Since his visit the conditions of the slum have improved immensely. Carlos Rojas, administrator at the neighborhood's Catholic church, says the Catholic Church has played a huge part in helping the neighborhood thrive.
